Speaker

Dr Rubina (Ruby) Bunjun is an infectious disease immunologist in the Division of Medical Virology. Her career has broadly focused on mucosal immunology. Ruby’s PhD investigated how HIV infection altered T cell immunity to tuberculosis in the lung. Her postdoctoral work investigated biological factors—such as sexually transmitted infections and hormonal contraceptives—that may increase HIV acquisition risk by altering the female genital tract environment.

Her current research aims to understand immunity and immunopathology in understudied and at-risk populations in Africa. She leads projects examining pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2 in adolescents. Ruby has recently received a UKRI/UK MRC African Research Leaders fellowship to conduct immunological sub-studies within the REVIVE clinical trial. She is active in science communication and is a strong advocate for mental health in academia.
