Melissa Abrahams

Melissa Abrahams is a Senior Coordinator for Research Systems at the University of Cape Town (UCT), with more than 12 years of experience in higher education. Her work sits at the intersection of research administration, technology and people, with a particular interest in how research information management systems can support researchers, streamline administrative processes and enable better decision-making.

Within UCT’s Research Office, Melissa works closely with the electronic Research Administration (eRA) environment, supporting its implementation, administration and use across the research lifecycle. She is passionate about exploring how technology, automation, data and reporting can transform research administration into a more strategic and enabling function.

Melissa holds an Honours degree in Information Systems from UCT and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Information Systems. Her research explores the role of technology in the learning experiences of students with disabilities in South African higher education, with a focus on institutional culture, access to technology and structural barriers to inclusive digital learning. Her work contributes a Global South perspective to conversations around technology, disability and inclusive education.

Beyond her professional and academic interests, Melissa is passionate about people, animals and community initiatives. She is a dedicated animal rescue supporter and proud owner of Jack Russell Terriers.

At the heart of Melissa’s work is a simple belief: technology should not simply make processes digital; it should make them better, more accessible and more meaningful for the people who use them.
