Assoc. Prof Muki Shey is a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow (in Public Health & Tropical Medicine) and a Chief Research Officer in the Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town. He completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Yaounde 1 in Cameroon, a PhD in Clinical Sciences and Immunology in UCT and a postdoctoral fellowship in mucosal immunology at the Centre for the AIDS
Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). He worked as a Scientist II and Laboratory Manager at Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation South Africa endpoint assay laboratory working on clinical trials of novel TB vaccines. He is a Principal Investigator and his research group is investigating the epidemiological, immunological and genetic factors contributing to protection against infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in healthcare workers with sustained occupational exposure. He is a C2-rated researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa, and recipient of the Silver medal for outstanding scientific contributions to health research from the South African Medical Research Council. He is a recipient of several funding and research grants from local and international agencies including the National Research Foundation of South Africa, Wellcome Trust, and the World Health Organisation
