Dr Yolande Harley is Director of Research of UCT's Faculty of Health Sciences. Her role encompasses strategic advancement of research, development of partnerships, oversight and planning of finances, and leadership of the Faculty Research Office The presentation will highlight the importance of considering your research from an entrepreneurial perspective in our contemporary environment. What is the current research landscape, how will you fund your research ideas, how will you support your salary, what skills and knowledge (beyond your scientific ones) will help you get ahead, who will you need to connect with to do this? The talk will raise awareness of practical aspects of a research career such as fundraising, grants management, and engagement with our legal and regulatory environment. It will emphasise the need to take ownership of your research future, with tips and contacts for assistance on this journey.
