Dr Eduardo Pinheiro Amaral [Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, NIAID, NIH]

Dr Bruno Andrade  [Oswaldo Cruz Foundation]

Hosted by Prof Robert Wilkinson [IDM/CIDRI-Africa]

Dr Eduardo specialized in immunology of infectious diseases. He started working in the TB field in 2005 in Dr Thereza Kipnis’ and Dr Elena Lassousnkaia’s laboratory in Rio de Janeiro, establishing an animal model to screen pathogenic mycobacterium clinical isolates. In 2009, he moved to Sao Paulo to study the mechanism of immunopathology during severe forms of tuberculosis following infection with hypervirulent strains of mycobacteria. In 2016, he started his post-doctoral at NIH focusing in the understand of the mechanism of cell death and oxidative stress during severe forms tuberculosis.

Dr Andrade is a clinical human immunologist specialized in biomarker discovery. His research is dedicated to identifying reliable host biomarkers that can predict susceptibility to infection and disease severity in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. They published several relevant publications merging data from experimental studies and clinical investigations to describe key inflammatory pathways involved in the pathogeneses of severe TB and TB-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. In addition, by establishing a strong network of collaborators from different TB endemic countries, such as India, China and South Africa, they have designed cohort studies in which synchronization of clinical and laboratorial data collection resulted in validation of biomarker findings across countries with different TB and HIV epidemiology.
