Prof Ivan Mijakovic [Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, Centre for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark]

Host: Prof Jonathan Blackburn [IBMS/IDM]

Following a rapid academic ascension, Prof Mijakovic accepted a position as a full Professor of Bacterial Systems Biology at Chalmers University of Technology and another full professorship at the Technical University of Denmark; thus, leading two academic groups. His research groups primarily work towards understanding bacterial protein phosphorylation and their physiological roles in combating bacterial pathogens. In this challenging field of research, he has made pioneering contributions to the development of methods for the study of protein phosphorylation and seminal studies elucidating their physiological role in the fight against bacterial pathogens. More recently, he has focused on the metabolic engineering of bacterial cell factories (for the production of industrial enzymes, platform chemicals, and nanoparticles) and bio-applications of the advanced carbon material, graphene (in collaboration with the EU Graphene Flagship), for antibacterial coatings, bio-sensors, and the extraction of oleochemicals from cell factories. Thus, Prof. Mijakovic is increasingly applying multiple cutting-edge approaches to basic and applied science projects.
