Melissa Thomas
Melissa is a dedicated life sciences professional with expertise in biochemistry, genomics, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). She holds a BSc in Human Life Sciences from Stellenbosch University, an Honours degree in Biochemistry, and an MSc in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Cape Town. During her graduate research at ICGEB, here in the IDM, she investigated Kaposi Sarcoma Herpesvirus genomics, developed a custom de novo assembly pipeline, and collaborated with international partners on a whole-genome sequencing project. She successfully transitioned from academic research to the biotechnology industry, gaining comprehensive experience in NGS technologies through progressive scientific support and sales internships. She currently serves as Inside Sales Specialist at Watchmaker Genomics, leveraging her deep technical knowledge and strong communication skills to deliver advanced genomic solutions to customers in the NGS field.
 
Christopher Borragerio
Christopher (MSc (Cum Laude) - Biochemistry, Stellenbosch University) is a highly analytical biochemist with specialized expertise in peptide biochemistry, method development, protein formulation, peptide bioactivity, biophysical techniques, microbial isolation, and culturing, this scientist brings a multidisciplinary approach to solving complex challenges in both research and industry.

Having successfully transitioned from academic research into the start-up ecosystem, Christopher has demonstrated a strong ability to adapt and upskill, applying core biochemical principles to meet the evolving needs of fast-paced, innovation-driven environments. His contributions have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for product development teams, where agility and precision are key.

With a robust foundation in protein biochemistry, bioanalytical and biophysical studies, Christopher offers deep expertise in method development, process optimization, protein characterization, and validation. Their scientific acumen is matched by a commitment to continuous learning and impactful innovation.
