Dr Christle de Beer: Pioneering Enterprise Thinking at the IDM

Dr Christle de Beer’s journey to becoming the IDM’s first Deputy Director for the Research Enterprise is anything but conventional, yet it reflects the kind of leadership evolution that continues to strengthen the Institute: dynamic, strategic, and inclusive.
Over the years she has carved a niche at the intersection of research, innovation, and strategic planning. Her doctoral research, based across Europe and the UK, investigated why research commercialisation often fails in the Global South. Later, an Executive MBA refined her systems thinking, enabling her to shift the IDM’s research from being viewed as an administrative necessity to a strategic enterprise that anticipates challenges and creates new opportunities. Her appointment as the first Professional, Administrative Support and Services (PASS) staff member to serve as Deputy Director is symbolic of IDM’s evolving leadership culture.
