Transformation Working Group

The IDM Transformation Committee (ITC) is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment within the Institute. Guided by the IDM’s core values of Excellence, Collaboration, and Transformation, the committee works to ensure that all members of our community — including staff, researchers, and students — feel represented, respected, and a true sense of belonging. The committee is Chaired by, Fezile Khumalo or Co-Chaired by Anna-Ursula Happel.
Our mission statement, "Transformation: Focusses on promoting and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the IDM community and spaces. The initiative is aligned with IDM’s values of Excellence, Collaboration, and Transformation. The goal is to create a space where all staff, researchers, and students feel represented, fostering a sense of belonging and respect and for people to express their gender, race and identity freely."
Our efforts focus on improving representation across gender, race, and other historically under-represented groups, with the aim of creating sustainable and meaningful change. Through strategic initiatives, advocacy, and dialogue, the committee supports the development of inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.
The Transformation Committee also leads community-building events such as Heritage Day and Africa Day, celebrating the rich cultural diversity within the IDM.
Membership to the ITC is voluntary and open to all IDM-affiliated staff and students. To join, please contact Fezile Khumalo or Charlotte Schutz. If you’re interested in assisting with specific events on a more flexible basis, you may also join the volunteer list by emailing Fezile Khumalo directly.
