As Head of Operations at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM), Selisha Naidoo is the force behind the seamless functioning of 56 laboratories and 9 core technology platforms. But her role goes far beyond management, it’s about reimagining what scientific excellence looks like, from the ground up.

Selisha’s journey began as a Microbiologist, and subsequently in laboratory and clinical trial management, where she saw first-hand how vital infrastructure, systems, compliance and well-equipped technology platforms are to scientific discovery. “Operations quietly but powerfully support groundbreaking research,” she says. “That intersection, of science and high-level management, is where I found my passion.”

Appointed to head the IDM’s laboratory operations, Selisha quickly proved her ability to lead through precision, integrity, and calm under pressure. She describes her leadership style as people-centred and excellence-driven: “People are at the centre of it all, the research, scientific discoveries, our technology platforms. When we give them room to grow and develop their passions, we create and entire ecosystem that thrives.”

Her impact is most visible in the IDM’s ambitious push toward sustainability. As the Institute moves to become Africa’s first My Green Lab-certified academic institution, Selisha has been a driving force behind the transformation. “It’s about redefining what excellence means,” she says. “Not just what we discover—but how responsibly we get there. Human and planetary health are inextricably linked, and I am proud for us to set a precedent in working to protect that relationship.”

Whether she is working on the design of new research facilities, reviewing new clinical trials or managing the high containment level 3 facilities, Selisha brings strategic expertise and adaptability to every challenge. She is equally passionate about innovation, ensuring that future-facing skills, sustainable practices, and empowered teams are built into the IDM’s operational DNA.

Her proudest achievements reflect this dual vision: managing complex, compliant lab systems that drive scientific discovery while advancing a culture of responsible science. “I want to leave behind stronger more innovative systems, greener labs, technologically advanced platforms and a model for how science, systems, and sustainability can evolve together.”

When she’s not overseeing high-containment facilities or running audits, you’ll find her boxing—a grounding ritual she says helps her focus and strengthens her resilience.

To early-career women, she offers this advice: “Follow your passions with persistence. Lead fearlessly, and with purpose. True leadership is built on integrity and empathy, driven by courage and consistency. The most powerful leadership is measured in the systems we strengthen, the people we empower and the legacy we leave behind.”
