Joseph Gitari is currently pursuing a PhD in Medical Microbiology at the Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit (MMRU). His research focuses on adaptive mutagenesis in mycobacteria, with the aim of understanding mycobacterial evolution under drug-induced stress.
He is also interested in the application of imaging technologies in discovery research on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) of bacterial origin. At present, Joseph is involved in the Wellcome-funded microbeScope project, hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT) in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Imperial College London. The project seeks to develop innovative, advanced, and locally sustainable bioimaging technologies to support infectious disease research in disease-endemic regions of Africa
