Dr Zoe Fisher

Group Leader for the Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallisation (DEMAX) European Spallation Source (ESS; Sweden)

Host: Prof Edward Sturrock [HOD: Integrative Biomedical Sciences/IDM]

Dr Fisher is currently the Group Leader for the Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallization (DEMAX) platform at the European Spallation Source (ESS; Sweden). Since 2016 she has also held an adjunct position as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology at Lund University and since 2017 also serves as Deputy Division Leader for the Scientific Activities Division at the ESS. DEMAX is a user support lab that focuses on chemical and biological deuteration of small organic molecules and biological macromolecules, as well as support for large crystal growth. Prior to ESS she was a staff scientist in the Bioscience Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA). During this time she was Instrument Scientist and user program coordinator for both the Protein Crystallography Station (PCS) beamline and user support labs at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Outside of her work at the ESS, she is also engaged in collaborative research on the structure-function of carbonic anhydrases using crystallography and NMR, developing efficient biodeuteration strategies, neutron-based drug design, and large crystal growth for neutron studies. She has authored or co-authored >60 peer-reviewed publications and they span a broad scientific area including biochemistry, structural biology, X-ray and neutron crystallography, mass spectrometry, enzyme kinetics, NMR, and molecular biology.
