ICGEB holds workshop on host-directed therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases

The workshop attracted international experts as speakers and participants - from Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Sudan, Switzerland, Tanzania and USA, as well as South Africans.
The programme gave insights into current and possible future therapies, combining pathogen-directed targeting together with host-directed drug therapy to achieve augmentation of protective host factors and elimination of invading pathogens. Discussions also included methods to identify new host-directed therapeutics, model systems for testing, current and emerging infectious diseases, development from identification to compound formulation, and future perspectives.
Importantly, the ICGEB workshop also created a platform for networking, capacity building and collaboration. Included were competitive poster sessions for emerging young scientists from ICGEB member states, who gave four rounds of presentations to well-established invited international experts. Cash prizes were sponsored (as below).
In addition, two of the international speakers (Prof. Martin Bachmann and Asst. Prof. Sergey Grivennikov) gave seminars to a wider community at the end of the ICGEB workshop, on their recent scientific findings.
The workshop was supported by the South African National Research Foundation; and sponsored by The Scientific Group (Gold sponsor), Whitehead Scientific (Silver sponsor) and Inqaba Biotec (Bronze sponsor).
