Claire Hoving receives Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine

Dr Claire Hoving, Associate Member of the IDM and of the Division of Immunology, has been awarded an Intermediate Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from the Wellcome Trust. The highly competitive Intermediate Fellowship programme aims to support research that will improve public health and tropical medicine at a local, national and global level, and will fully support Claire for five years.
 
Claire is a basic immunologist and her research aims at understanding host immune responses to disease with a particular focus on HIV-related fungal infections and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She trained originally with Frank Brombacher (ICGEB-CT and IDM, UCT) and Gordon Brown (University of Aberdeen and Adjunct Member of the IDM), and is also the recipient of an NRF Research Career Advancement award (for five years) as well as a three year fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation Developing Emerging Academic Leaders (DEAL) in Africa programme.

Her project, entitled “Host recognition and clearance of Pneumocystis: investigating immune mediators and mechanisms”, will involve close collaboration with Mark Nicol (Member of the IDM and of the Division of Medical Microbiology) and Heather Zar (Division of Paediatric Medicine), University of Cape Town. Her research will be embedded within the AFGrica Unit, in the IDM.
