Prof Adrie JC Steyn, PhD is a basic scientist with appointments at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban, South Africa, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Birmingham AL, USA. AHRI is a Welcome Trust and HHMI-funded basic science research institute in Durban of which one of the goals is to examine the mechanisms of TB disease. He is leading efforts for the Human TB Lung Project, a prospective cohort established to collect and study resected lung tissue from patients infected with drug susceptible, MDR and XDR M. tuberculosis. He is also leading efforts for the Human Postmortem Program that collect and study the cellular and pathological basis of latent TB. One of his interests is to characterize the 3D environment of the human tuberculous lung using microcomputed tomography (µCT) and integrating those efforts with other -omic platforms including spatial transcriptomics and multiplex technologies.
