Speaker
Dr Tariq Ganief is a Lecturer in Integrative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Cape Town and an IDM Fellow. His research interests include the intricate relationship between the microbiomes and human health, exploring how microbial communities influence disease development and the maintenance of well-being. His broad interests include understanding host microbiome interactions under a range of disease settings including HIV. He has developed several novel techniques enabling deep and high thoughput analysis of these microbiomes to enable biological insights into their role in disease and health.
Tariq completed his undergraduate degree in biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape and earned his PhD at the University of Cape Town under Jonathan Blackburn, where his research focused on the mechanisms underlying the development of HIV-associated dementia. He then pursued postdoctoral training at the Proteome Center, Tübingen with Boris Macek, contributing to multiple projects exploring the complex connections between the gut microbiome and neurodevelopmental disease development.
