Dr Tanko Fatime Ramla

Junior Research Fellow

Tanko holds an MSc and a PhD in Medical Virology. Her research focuses on understanding the factors (hormonal contraceptives, vaginal inflammation and microbiome) influencing vaginal health and the risk of HIV infection. She is also interested in biomarker disease discovery that may be translated into clinical tools to improve human health. Currently, Tanko is involved in the development and validation of a point-of-care test (GIFT: Genital InFlammation Test) for detecting asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis to improve women’s reproductive health outcomes in Africa and other regions where syndromic management is implemented. She is part of the Mucosal Immunology Group.
