The IDM Mentorship Committee was established in recognition of the need for structured support that extends beyond the traditional academic supervisory relationship. Many students, early-career researchers, and Professional, Administrative Support and Service (PASS) staff require additional guidance — not only in building specific professional skills, but also in navigating personal challenges such as work-life balance and integration into academic life.

Chaired by Simon Mendelsohn, the committee oversees the IDM Mentorship Programme, which is designed to provide tailored, meaningful support through mentor-mentee partnerships. These relationships help mentees access career guidance, develop critical skills, and overcome both professional and personal barriers to success. The goal is to nurture confident, capable leaders across all levels of the Institute.

Key components of the Mentorship Programme include:

  • Matching mentees with experienced mentors who provide guidance and encouragement;

  • Supporting career and personal development;

  • Offering a safe space for honest, supportive conversations;

  • Promoting equity, growth, and inclusion in academic and research environments.

Mentorship Programme

The IDM Mentorship Programme is open to all staff and students affiliated with the IDM. The programme encourages one-to-one support given by a more experienced colleague to a junior colleague over a period of at least a year. Mentoring can provide support to mentees around a number of issues.
