Robert Millar wins AU 2017 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for Scientific Excellence

Professor Robert Millar has been awarded the 2017 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for Scientific Excellence (AUKNASE). This Continental Award is given in recognition of outstanding scientific achievement, and contribution through science, to socioeconomic development in Africa. 0 000. Bob received this prestigious award during the African Union Summit, Addis Ababa, 28th and 29th January 2018.

The Commission of the African Union is committed to support the use and development of science in Africa and has, since 2008 been running the AUKNASE awards, in memory of the Great Pan-Africanist and First President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a firm believer in African liberation and unity.

Robert is a Member of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, UCT and Professor and Director, Centre for Neuroendocrinology, University of Pretoria. His most recent research focuses on the breakthrough discovery that function can be restored to inactivating mutations in human G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are responsible for most cell communication. This discovery unlocks the possibility for precision, personalised pharmaceuticals with the potential to treat a variety of diseases including blindness, obesity, diabetes, and thyroid, muscle, kidney, reproductive and mental health conditions.
