Kyu Rhee is Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York USA. His laboratory has pioneered the development and application of mass spectrometry-based analytical methods to conduct systems level metabolomics studies of the human pathogen, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with a special focus on the application of metabolomics to the study of drug mechanisms and drug development as part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation TB Drug Accelerator. These tools have also been successfully applied to monitor the uptake, levels and fluxes of metabolites (including lipids) in a diverse range of cell types, ranging from bacteria to yeast mitochondria to mammals, and to discover and identify new and/or unannotated metabolites and enzymatic activities. Prof. Rhee has published more than forty papers including in high-impact journals such as Science, Nature Microbiology, PNAS, and Nature Reviews Microbiology, and he is a founding member of the North American Metabolomics Association.
