Valerie Mizrahi elected to the National Academy of Sciences
Professor Emerita Valerie Mizrahi, a full member and former Director of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM), has been elected as an international member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
Her election forms part of the NAS’s 2026 cohort, which recognises 120 new members and 25 international members for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. International members are honoured for their scientific excellence and are drawn from outside the United States.
Professor Mizrahi, who is Director of the Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit (MMRU) at the University of Cape Town, is internationally recognised for her contributions to tuberculosis research. Her election to the NAS is one of the highest honours in science and reflects the global impact of her work and leadership.
This recognition honours Professor Mizrahi’s outstanding career and enduring influence, and speaks to the strength of leadership that she has established at the IDM, a legacy that continues to shape the Institute.
